Palm gets another $100 million in funding

Palm announced it has received more funding and its stock has risen 13%. Equity firm Elevation Partners has agreed to give Palm another $100 million. Elevation Partners purchased 25% of Palm in September 2007 but they will up their stake in the company. Are they crazy? They don't think so:

Best Buy's earnings tank big time

The economy is hitting everyone hard and that includes Best Buy. Best Buy reported on Tuesday its earnings for the third quarter dropped by 77% over the same quarter last year.
Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson has announced that Best Buy will be offering voluntary buyouts to all of its employees. If a sufficient number of buyouts are not taken, they will have to start layoffs. In addition to cutting back on employess Best Buy will cut expenditures in half and delay new store openings.

BlackBerry on Windows Mobile?

The BlackBerry Application Suite (BAS) is out and it's getting good reviews. BlackBerry Application Suite runs on Windows Mobile 6 devices and provides almost exactly the same experience as RIM's OS. You basically have a BlackBerry within Windows Mobile.
There are a few limitations however.
Blackberry Maps is there but it is not location aware.
It cannot access physical hardware, such as GPS, Bluetooth, though since calls are through WM, you can use a BT headset.

Sony Xperia X1 delayed until January 9

Multiple web sites are reporting that the Sony Xperia X1 will not be out until January 9, 2009. The device was supposed to be out this week but they were pulled off the shelves. SonyStyle.com changed their ship date of December 8th to January 12, 2009. Best Buy has changed its online listing from "Pre-Order" to "Coming Soon." Is January 9 the correct date? Nobody knows but the Xperia X1 is definitely not out this week.

Palm's Q2 financials going down

Palm reported preliminary results for its second quarter of fiscal year 2009, which ended Nov. 28, 2008.
The company announced that it expects to record revenues for Q2 fiscal year 2009 in the range of $190 million to $195 million. The revenue decline vs. the company's Q1 fiscal year 2009 and Q2 fiscal year 2008 is a result of reduced demand for maturing smartphone and handheld products. Rogers is set to offer the HTC Touch Diamond in Canada for $199 with on a 3-year contract(with a minimum $45 voice / data plan).

Verizon drops Omnia price to $199

Just days after the release of the Samsung Omnia on Verizon, they have dropped the price to $199 (after a mail-in rebate). Perhaps they realized how crazy they were to price the Omnia above the $200 mark, and above the price of the iPhone. The Omnia is a nice phone but it's not MORE THAN THE iPHONE nice.

Palm cutting jobs

Palm Inc said Friday it is cutting its workforce. Palm has been struggling lately as it continues to lose market share to rivals like RIM and Apple.
Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox said the layoffs began this week, but she declined to say how many jobs would be cut. "The goal is to consolidate resources and focus our efforts more effectively," Fox said.
PalmInfocenter reports they have a source that says Palm could cut up to 200 jobs. Their total workforce is believed to be 1050.

American Airlines is trying to make flying a little easier for the holidays. The company is trying a new way of electronically distributing boarding passes on traveler's phones.
The service is available now for passengers departing on domestic flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Passengers will be able to use these two-dimensional barcode boarding passes instead of the normal paper boarding pass.
