Siberian Strike X: Blast Your Way to The Finish
Software Reviews
By: pdaBlast! Staff
November 07, 2002

The premise of Siberian Strike X is simple (strange - but simple) Stalinbot, an evil cross-breed of Stalin and the Mir Space station (I said it was strange) is trying to use tainted vodka to take over the world. Your mission, should you accept it, is to destroy Stalinbot, but first you must get past his legion of dedicated followers. How well does this shoot-em up game rank against some of the other top Pocket PC games? Read on to find out.

Siberian Strike X is a nice shoot-em up game similar to those which you would find in any local arcade. Your goal is to shoot your way through a myriad of obstacles and enemies to reach the 'boss' at the end of the level. As you move up in levels you'll see different types of enemies including planes, tanks, ships, and even trains. The bosses at the end of each level also get increasingly difficult to defeat - with Stalinbot being the most difficult of all.

At the start of each mission/level you are select your fighter. It is important to choose wisely as each fighter has his/her own individual strengths weaknesses. Some of them are built for speed with low shield levels, while others are strong as steel, but lack the speed.

Aiding you on your quest are a variety of 'bonus items'. These items include power-ups which increase your fire power, vary your weapon, give you a shield, add extra-lives, or even bring your two partners to your aid. Many of these power-ups are time sensitive and will disappear once they have been used for a certain period of time.

Game Play
Siberian Strike X plays very smoothly with excellent sound and graphics. You have the option of controlling your fighter with either the d-pad or the stylus. There is also the option of changing the button configuration. This is important because you will need to use the different buttons to release the smart bombs and/or to fire your guns. I found both methods of fighter control to be quite good, but I prefer using the stylus - especially in the 'slalom'

The options menu of this game provides the normal options to alter the music and special effects volume, and to alter the button configuration. An interesting option that can be altered via the options menu is to start the game at any level that you have already reached.

Conclusion
If you're looking for some real arcade style shoot'em up action I definitely recommend taking a look at Siberian Strike X. The game has all of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a shoot'em up game on any platform. There are a lot of different levels each with its own unique layout and difficulties. Some of the levels require a lot of fire power, and others require a more agile plane. This is definitely one of the better action/arcade titles that I have every played on the Pocket PC. Siberian Strike X gets a score of 4.8 out of 5.
